This movie is female focused and honoring of the journey.
Mary Beth has been in a dark chapter that is finally coming to an end, she is almost ready to start a new chapter after divorce with the support of her son and her Mother. But what will this chapter be? She doesn’t seem to be able to settle on next steps because she isn’t ready to open up and discuss what her heart is going through. BUT Mary Beth opens up the 4th wall and tells us where her heart is pointed – towards the past. She has found a memory that involves a romance from a distant past. Not a romance she is ready to understand exactly, but a romance that planted a seed.
After being married to a man for 20 years, Mary Beth takes a journey to discover herself and her feelings towards Wanda – a boundless spirit who is interested in women with obvious yet appropriately paced interest in Mary Beth. This movie is made for someone who wants to walk on this journey alongside Mary Beth. Starring Constance Brenneman, “Mary Beth Higgins” is genuine, warm and subtle. Cathy DeBuono as “Wanda” is vibrant, kind, and not afraid to take up the screen.
Written and directed by Jan Miller Corran, this story has slow moving, gentle, and easy to follow emotional beats. If anything, I wanted to call my Mom and have her watch it from her house at the same time on the phone with me so we could discuss it later. If you’re a millennial, you might also want to tap a parent in to enjoy this one.
