Dealing with generational trauma and familial disconnections is HOT lately. Holy crap, ENCANTO and the preceding short FAR FROM THE TREE got me good. Many many family talks about saying what we feel could be left unsaid. But, wow, TURNING RED did me in. I should have been warned. This All Female Top Team knocked it out of the park. I think I know why:

“It happened very organically,” Pixar president Jim Morris told The Hollywood Reporter of bringing together the film’s head team. “It wasn’t like we decided, ‘Let’s make sure that that happened.’” “People who work well together wanted to work with other people that they like,” added Pixar CCO and longtime filmmaker Pete Docter. “They were not only all-female, but it was probably the most efficient film we’ve ever made. They were really smart thinkers and risk-takers. I think we can all learn something from them.”

This film included a deep dive on the Mother-Daughter relationship:

Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! Directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins…

I paused this movie no less than 8 times to talk to my kids about:

  1. Big feelings get even bigger in puberty
  2. Big feelings are OK
  3. Moms and Kiddos are allowed to disagree
  4. My love for you has nothing to do with your obedience or my hopes for you
  5. Friends are SO important to your health
  6. Tools for handling big emotions is the key to peace with who you are
  7. Again, BIG FEELINGS ARE OK
  8. Family pressure can also come with family support when you’re HONEST about what’s going on inside of you AND ask for your needs to be met!

My goodness. I had no idea I would have so many big important talks with my kids over this movie. But we were ready. This will be the Disney generation of “breaking cycles” and I’m so proud to walk with my kids through this!

Cuddle and watch this IMMEDIATELY!
