Juicy June: What’s the Recipe for a Perfect Murder?

Juicy June: What’s the Recipe for a Perfect Murder?

A review of ARSENIC AND ADOBO by Mia P. Manansala.

If you like your murder mysteries drizzled in delectable food descriptions, then ARSENIC AND ADOBO by Mia P. Manansala is the book for you. Agatha Christie meets Anthony Bourdain in the compulsively readable first release of the Tita Rosie mystery series.

Lila returns home to recover from a disastrous breakup and help her aunt run the failing family restaurant. Things heat up when a local food critic is murdered and Lila is pinned as the prime suspect. With the restaurant and her own innocence on the line, Lila teams up with her longtime BFF to uncover the real culprit before it’s too late. Along the way, Lila investigates the local eateries, and Manansala serves up the signature specials in salivating specificity.

It’s a delicious whodunit that will have you asking for seconds (don’t worry, book 2 “Homicide and Halo Halo” is scheduled for release February 2022). In the meantime, you can make some of the food mentioned in the book — including Lila’s Ube Crinkle Cookies — thanks to an appendix of recipes in the back!
