The key to great storytelling is memorable characters. If characters aren’t emotionally authentic, there’s simply no reason to keep watching a movie or reading a script (or to keep writing one, for that matter). Christopher and Kathy Riley, the authors of the book, The Defining Moment: How Writers and Actors Build Characters, will guide you on this crucial journey into the heart of dimensional, dynamic characters and illuminate the best ways to bring them to life. This workshop will dive deep into the exploration of what actors and screenwriters share in common – the creation of great characters – and provide insights that are enriching to storytellers of all types.Who should attendAll writers, actors, and storytellers of all stripes who want to discover a powerful new key to unlock any character they seek to develop, write or portray.

Requirements: Note-taking tools.

By the end of this workshop you’ll know:

  • The essential insights into the forces that create character;
  • How directors, editors, cinematographers and composers dramatize key moments;
  • Practical exercises for defining and redefining character; and
  • Tips for discovering the moments that matter most in the lives of your characters and in your own life.
